The HBC-You Excellence Award Background and Guidelines
This annual scholarship program offers two (2) $500 grants to graduating senior medical students who are currently enrolled in, and in good standing at a historically Black college or university medical school (Meharry Medical College, Howard University College of Medicine, Morehouse School of Medicine).

The award was created to highlight the talent and capabilities of underrepresented students in medicine who attend institutions which are responsible for producing the largest numbers of Black physicians in the US. Currently, only 5% of all physicians in the United States are Black/African American. This dearth of Black physicians is a result of generations of marginalization and withheld opportunities for some of the nation’s best and brightest, those who contribute to the predominance of care for minority and underserved patients.

In accordance with the WCBD Foundation’s overall mission to support the development of future Black physicians, we offer this award to students who exemplify the ideals of the Foundation and are committed to pursuing excellence in the field of medicine. All students who meet the above criteria. Preference for recipients may be given to students who self-identify as under-represented minorities in medicine, and students who are first-generation physicians.*

*WCBD defines underrepresented in medicine as belonging to those racial and ethnic populations that are underrepresented in the medical profession relative to their numbers in the general population.
