The Five Founders of WCBD

Celeste Green, MD
Chair, WCBD Advisory Board

Celeste is a first-generation American, a native of south Florida, and a proud UNC School of Medicine graduate (2018). She completed her Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies at the University of Central Florida. She earned her Master's of Public Health at The George Washington University and had a brief stint in "the real world" before landing in Chapel Hill for medical school, where she remained to complete residency training in Obstetrics & Gynecology. She is currently completing a Maternal-Fetal Medicine fellowship in Houston, TX.
Starting a nonprofit in medical school was never an item on her to-do list, but thanks to her impassioned and visionary team, WCBD has a bright, impactful future ahead.
In her spare time, Celeste loves to cook and will find any reason to make you a playlist.  Some of her biggest cultural influences are
The Autobiography of Malcolm X, jerk chicken, and The College Dropout.

Spencer Carter, MD
WCBD Advisory Board

Born and raised in Baltimore, MD. Spencer graduated from UNC School of Medicine in 2018. Prior to medical school at UNC, he attended Wake Forest University, where he majored in Psychology with a minor in Biology. Spencer is pursuing a career in cardiology after completing residency at University of Chicago, preferably in an urban area without adequate access to healthcare. His involvement in White Coats Black Doctors stems from a desire to diversify healthcare so that providers more closely reflect the communities they serve. In his free time, Spencer can likely be found skating at a local roller rink, catching up on his weekly bible plan, or watching the Baltimore Ravens.

Kevin Courts, MD
WCBD Advisory Board

“You can never be overdressed or overeducated.” – Oscar Wilde
After attending UNC Chapel Hill for undergrad where he studied Biology, Kevin was groomed to have a penchant for all things Tar Heel. After graduating, he knew he would return for medical school. During his time away from Chapel Hill he completed the UNC-Greensboro post-baccalaureate program and worked in the Emergency Department as a scribe. These experiences generated a desire to serve patients as a long-term provider of comprehensive care, and fueled his interest in Family Medicine. In his free time, Kevin can be found listening to live soul and/or hip hop music or perusing local restaurants for soul food.

Anthony McClenny, MD, MPH
WCBD Advisory Board

Anthony McClenny is a native of Charlotte, NC. His interests include applying principles of public health and research to narrow health disparities in marginalized populations, and education. Prior to medical school, he taught Earth and Environmental Science at Zebulon B. Vance High School, his alma mater. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and minor degrees in African American Studies and Chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Many of his guiding principles and values are influenced by his Christian faith and philosophers such as Malcolm X, W. E. B. Du Bois, Dr. MLK Jr., Stokely Carmichael, and Cornel West. If he is not attending to his patients as a resident at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, you can find him reading, spending time with family and friends, and maintaining his “chops” on the piano. He is an avid basketball player and hopes that through his play people will understand the great quote of the esteemed Bill Russell, “That this game has always been, and will always be, about buckets."

Jenay Powell, MD
Executive Director

Jenay hails from the Queen City of Charlotte, NC. She received her A.B. Degree from Harvard University in History of Science with a focus in Medicine & Society and a secondary in Global Health and Health Policy. She also completed a Romance Language Citation in Spanish, a language she continues to practice speaking with her Hispanic patients. A self-proclaimed "gadget girl", Jenay can be found on her laptop, indulging in retail therapy, or working out when she's not dreaming of a future in hematology/oncology-- a specialty she's chosen for its capacity to maintain significant long-term relationships with patients. Jenay is honored to be a part of the White Coats Black Doctors leadership and cannot wait to see the heights to which the organization will grow.

What Our Supporters Are Saying

During the 2016 Howard University commencement address, President Barack Obama said to the graduates, "Be confident in your Blackness." WCBD is at the forefront of this movement in addition to promoting peak Black Excellence. I could not be more proud yet humbled by rocking this apparel and supporting the overall mission.
